Is Chocolate Going Extinct
Is Chocolate Going Extinct. Chocolate is good and climate change is bad, so naturally the latter is predicted to eradicate the former. Chocolate companies are worried their cocoa supply might run out.
More than half the world's cocoa beans currently come from two countries in West Africa: Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. The story originated in an article published in the Business Insider that claimed chocolates are on their way to becoming extinct. According to research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, cacao is an extremely difficult plant to cultivate.
Climate change has impacted not only the weather, but also the ecosystem and everything in it, including, it seems, chocolate.
Cacao trees require very precise conditions under which to grow.
That claim was repeated uncritically around. You can probably guess the "why" behind this prediction: climate change. Cacao extinction due to urbanization and climate change is unsettling for chocolate makers all around the world because of supply.
